Stonegate Pond (Area 1)
The work is to remove recent sediments deposited into Stonegate Pond caused by NCDOT
construction projects. The pond has been excavated before approximately ten years ago and is now
full of sediment. Its purpose is to act as a sediment basin for future erosion to prevent the sediments
from entering Lake Trace and is now ineffective. It is envisioned mechanical equipment such as
dozers and backhoes will be used to excavate the area to bedrock or to a maximum depth of 10 feet
below normal water line (elevation approximately 272.7 feet above Mean Sea Level (MSL). At the
dam, bedrock slopes from a depth of about 3 feet on the south side of the pond to a depth of about 15
feet on the north side. Bedrock is nearer the normal water line as one proceeds upstream from the
dam.
Large or prolonged rains could impact this work. Stonegate Pond will be lowered by the Contractor
several weeks prior to excavation work, removing the gate blocking the low level outlet, which will
drop the water level about 5 feet. Beyond the initial lowering of Stonegate Pond, the Contractor will be
responsible for controlling and maintaining the water levels during the sediment excavation work. It is
envisioned that the Contractor will need to provide a by-pass pumping operation or diversion
channels to divert the base flow in Carrs Creek away from the work area to avoid muddying the water
and passing it downstream into Lake Trace.
The Contractor will be responsible for dewatering the silt excavation area as necessary to perform the
work. The excavated material will be deposited on the south shore in areas designated on the map
for Area 1. Sewer systems are routed through the area and fill must be placed so that sewer pipes
are not broken or damaged, and manhole accessibility is maintained. Assume three manholes must
be raised. Approximately 2-3 acres will be provided for placement of the excavated sediments.
These areas, as well as the required access, will require preparation by removal and disposal of small
trees and underbrush. Proper interior drainage of surrounding areas must be maintained. Sediment
control methods and proper grading are required to prevent the fill sediments from eroding back into
the excavated pond area or into manholes. These fill areas will require final grading and grassing
upon completion.
Site ingress and egress will be from Traceway. Any damage to either the infrastructure within the
work area or roads used for transit to and from the work area must be corrected at the completion of
the work. It is estimated 7000 CY of sediment will be removed and deposited on the surrounding
area.
Attachment 5 pg. 1
Lower Carrs Creek/Lake Trace (Area 2)
The Stonegate Pond is no longer effectively functioning as a sediment basin for eroded materials and
therefore sediment removal is for this portion of Lake Trace is necessary. The area being affected is
primarily between the No. 5 tee box of the Carolina Trace Country Club (CTCC) Creek golf course
and the bridge crossing near No. 18 green at the entrance to Lake Trace proper. The area is used
primarily for recreation. Adjacent landowners are no longer able to use their boats as the water is too
shallow. Lake Trace is also an excellent lake for fishing. Work for this project must be accomplished
during the winter months. It is envisioned the excavation will be made using mechanical equipment
such as dozers and backhoes. Dredging will not be allowed. The normal Lake Trace water level is
approximately 256.5 feet MSL. Lake Trace will be lowered about 5 feet using a low level outlet to an
elevation of approximately 251.5 feet MSL by CTCC. In the deeper areas of the water area, where
top of sediment is at 252.5 MSL or lower, no removal will be required. The overall objective will be to
have approximately 4 feet of water in most areas when the lake is full. Because of bedrock and
higher elevation, the upper portion of the water area (above #3 bridge) will have a lower water
objective depth level of 2-3 feet. The sediments not being collected by Stonegate Pond are the main
source of the sediments that need to be removed. In general, 1 to 3 feet of sediment will be removed
in most removal areas. Bottom maps of the area will be provided which will show approximate areas
where sediment should be removed. The Contractor will be responsible for maintaining the water
levels during the sediment excavation work; therefore, siphons may be needed at the dam to maintain
the lowered elevation during large or prolonged rains. When Lake Trace is lowered, the main stream
of Carrs Creek is on the west side of this portion of Lake Trace. This stream will continue to run
during this work and should be avoided during the excavation process. There will be excavation from
both sides of Carrs Creek. The Contractor will be responsible for dewatering the silt excavation areas
as necessary to perform the work.
Site work will be needed to obtain access to the work area (see Map 2) and the access area must be
restored upon completion of the work. The excavated materials will be placed in the areas shown on
Map 2. Proper sediment control and grading must be used. Some sanitary manholes are in
designated fill areas. Care must be exercised not to damage sewer lines and access to manholes
must be maintained. All fill will be placed and prepared to prevent erosion of fill into Carrs Creek and
Lake Trace and into manholes. Fill areas that remain part of the golf course near the Hole No. 3
bridge must be graded and sodded with Bermuda grass upon job completion. Other fill areas are to
be graded and grassed.
Ingress and egress to the site will be via Traceway, Fairway Woods in Golf West Property Owners
Association (POA), Fairway Lane in North Shore POA, and Creek Run in Laurel Thicket I POA.
It is estimated 8000 CY will be excavated and deposited on the surrounding areas.
