HomeMy WebLinkAbout20040549 Ver 2_Other Agency Comments_20080205 USDA United States Forest National Forests in North Carolina 160 ZILLICOA ST STE A Department of Service Supervisor's Office ASHEVILLE NC 28801-1082 Agriculture 828-257-4200 File Code: 1950-1 Date: February 5, 2008 Dear Interested Citizen: The Grandfather Ranger District and the National Forests in North Carolina are asking for input on a proposal by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) to make improvements to Mill Creek Road, SR 1407, in McDowell County. NCDOT is proposing to straighten curves with road realignments in five locations, widen to a standard 20-foot roadway, grade, improve drainage, and pave Mill Creek Road beginning at the intersection with SR 1408 and traveling in southwesterly direction for 2.6 miles. Approximately 1.5 miles of the total 2.6 miles proposed for road improvements cross National Forest System lands. The purpose of-the proposed action is to decrease maintenance costs and to improve safety along this section of road. This road serves both private and public lands. Our analysis of this project will only cover impacts to National Forest System lands. Maps are enclosed showing the location of the proposed project. Review the proposed action along with the stated purposed and need and provide me with your input on the proposed actions. Your specific comments on the proposal will help me identify key issues and possible alternative ways of meeting the project's purpose and need.
