Sideris Senior Vice President Environmental, Health & Safety 523 South Church Street Mail Code: ECUP Charlotte, NC 28202 704-382-4303 Duke Energy, LLC submitted an NPDES permit application for the Riverbend Station on May 15, 2014. In order to meet the anticipated NPDES permit requirements associated with the discharge of interstitial water from site ash basins, the existing wastewater treatment process will be supplemented to include temporary and mobile treatment units. The purpose of this letter is to amend the NPDES permit application to reflect this process and to provide a courtesy notification of these planned temporary changes. Duke Energy hereby amends the NPDES permit application to reflect the changes at the plant. As described in Riverbend's current NPDES Permit, the existing wastewater treatment system for waste flows from Riverbend's former coal generating facility consists of sedimentation and neutralization processes provided by the two site ash ponds. The wastewater treatment system will be temporarily supplemented to include the following treatment: • Caustic, acid, coagulant, and polymer additive feed systems • Primary and Secondary Clarification • Metals scavenger system • Pressure granular media filters • Biological selenium removal • Polishing filters The treated effluent from the expanded wastewater treatment system will be routed along the similar path for final discharge to Mountain Island Lake. Any low volume wastes (such as reject streams, backwash processes, or liquid residuals) resulting from this additional treatment will be recycled to various points within the wastewater treatment system (temporary treatment units and/or the ash ponds). The vendor selected to provide these temporary units will be providing additional operational support staff for the treatment equipment. If there are any questions or concerns please contact Brad Loveland @704-609-5637.
