Alcoa's application for a stormwater permit (#NC0004308) to discharge contaminated groundwater into Badin Lake and Little Mountain Creek is just a quick and dirty way to escape cleanup requirements under the Clean Water Act. North Carolina has a problem with landfills leaking hazardous pollutants into our drinking water, and coal ash ponds are not the only source. Alcoa's unlined landfill is leaking cyanide, fluoride, TCE and heavy metals into Badin Lake and the Yadkin-Pee Dee River, compounding existing pollution problems. Before writing any permits, DENR should: • Analyze the hazardous wastes to determine exactly what Alcoa is trying to discharge into our waterways; • Enforce Alcoa's long history of violations under the prior permit; and • Require Alcoa to clean up their waste sites and put a stop to hazardous discharges into Badin Lake and Little Mountain Creek.
