DearIMm. Rndhguez,
U am a resident of I ake Tillery in Montgomery County and U am downstream from Badin I ake
Uamwriting borequest NCDENR deny Alcoa's application for a stormwater permit (:#NCO004308) to discharge cyanide
contaminated groundwater into Badim Lekeamd Litt|e &8nuntaimCreek.
According to the Fact Sheet, (page 1)Alcoa has done identified measures to treat the contaminated ground water adthe site. /s
noted in the Fact Sheet, Concentrations of 19 to 86 ug/l were detected which is 8 to 32 times greater than the water quality
standard.
The draft permit seems to conflict with language in the fact sheet. In the summary of proposed changes on page 11 of the Fact
Sheet.itmbstemimfnurp|acem'Asrhedulemfmomplianremf3yearamms/nduoed/nb4enem/linba.^Hnwe:er.page1 of the
permit states the permit imvalid through &8ay3O.2O2O.
Given A|cna'mdocumented record nf failure to comply with existing regulations as shown in the Permit Renewal Fact Sheet,
why should they be given three years to cnmp|y, but the permit be written for five years?
NCDENR should require Alcoa to clean up their leaking landfill and not permit discharges of hazardous chemicals into nearby
streams.
