Sutton Steam Plant(NPDES Permit NC0001422): "Request for Mercury Analysis of Fish from the Lower Cape Fear River,April 29, 2011". Dear Mr. Frederick, Thank you for your continued efforts to provide the North Carolina Division of Water Quality with annual fish selenium monitoring data from the lower Cape Fear River. Furthermore,we are in receipt of your April 29, 2011 report which also contains simultaneous mercury data from fish in the lower Cape Fear River. The North Carolina Division of Water Quality would like to take this opportunity to commend Progress Energy's efforts in collection of these data prior to the replacement of the coal-fired units. If you should have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me or my staff. Sincerely, Jay H. gauger Chief,Environmental Sciences Section Cc: Chuck Waklid, Deputy Director Matt Matthews, Surface Water Protection Section Tom Belnick. Sutton Electric Plant NPDES Permit NC0001422 Request for Mercury Analysis of Fish from the Lower Cape Fear River Dear Mr. Sauber: Progress Energy received your letter dated March 17,2011,requesting simultaneous mercury analysis of fish from the Lower Cape Fear River during all subsequent fish tissue selenium concentration monitoring efforts required in the L.V. Sutton Electric Plant NPDES Permit. Currently the permit requires annual fish tissue analysis if the outfall from the ash pond discharges to the river for 120 days in a calendar year. The baseline selenium concentrations reported for data collected in 1999 and all subsequent required annual reports for these data have been provided to the Division of Water Quality. In support of your request,Progress Energy will provide fish tissue mercury analysis data, along with selenium analysis data, from samples collected during subsequent fish tissue selenium concentration monitoring efforts. Progress Energy understands DWQ's desire to obtain fish tissue mercury concentration information from the river prior to the replacement of the coal-fired units by the combined cycle powerblock. Enclosed are mercury concentration data that have been analyzed simultaneously with the selenium concentration data in fish tissue samples from the Lower Cape Fear River since 1999(Tables 1-7). Progress Energy fish tissue trace element methodology results in total mercury dry weight concentrations(.tg/g). Based on the dry-to-fresh weight ratio, the calculated total mercury fresh weight concentrations are also presented. Please contact Ms. Robin Bryson,Environmental Specialist in our corporate office,at(919)546-3962,if there are any questions with this submittal.
