Dear Mr. Thorpe:
Reference the Department of the Army permit issued on June 15, 2007, for the replacement
of Bridge No. 198 on SR 1172 crossing the Intracoastal Waterway into Sunset Beach, Brunswick
County, North Carolina. Reference is also made to your email request of May 19, 2008 from
Mason Herndon, Division 3 Environmental Officer, for a permit modification to install sheet pile
between stations 13+00 to 14+00 to further contain a shifting fill base associated with the
permitted temporary causeway. According to the request this modification is proposed within
the authorized footprint and should adequately prevent the lateral movement observed in the
field.
We have determined that the proposed change is minor, and that a supplemental public
notice is not necessary. Your permit is hereby modified to include the aforementioned changes
as described in the May 19, 2008, modification request. It is understood that all other conditions
of the original permit and previous modifications remain applicable, including the permit
expiration date of December 31, 2007. Please be advised that once the temporary causeway is
removed, the fill positioned behind the approved sheet pile must be removed prior to pulling the
vertical pieces. Please provide an updated plan sheet showing the proposed modification
between the stations listed in the request. This plan sheet will be utilized in the future for
compliance purposes.
