Culveit Replacement 230060 US 701 Columbus County
Emergency Repair: TIP W-5601AT WBS 15006.1024015
JAMES H. TROGDON, III
SECRETARY
The North Catolina Deparhnent of Transportation (NCDOT) proposes to replace the 37LF
Double — 3@ 8' x 8' Concrete Box Culvert along US 701 over the Western Prong that wa's
severely damaged as the result of Hurricane Matthew on October 8, 2016. The emergency repair
will consist of removing the RCBC under dewatered condition and replacing with a three span
1501inear foot cored slab bridge (3 @ 50'). The bridge will be 36 feet wide which is consistent
with the existing RCBC.
Sheet Piling will be driven up and downstreaxn of the RCBC and the entire azea dewatered. Then
the contractor, ES Wagner will break the RCBC into manageable pieces to remove. Upon
removal the floodplain bench will be excavated to elevation 64.0. While the area is dewatered,
hydrology will naturally flow to the existing RCBC just north of Bridge 60 which will serve as
the bypass.
US 701 has been closed to traffic since the storm event and the existing off-site detour will be
maintained throughout the construction period. The target date for completion and re-opening of
US 701 is Memorial Day. Additionally, the Piedmont Natural Gas Line that was under the
upstream headwall of the RCBC has been relocated outside of the NCDOT Right-of-Way.
Impacts as the result of this project are minimal. There will be approximately 0.02 acre of
Permanent Fill in Wetlands, 0.04 acre Permanent Excavation and 0.03 acre oFTemponry Fill in
Wetlands (erosion control measures) proposed. The Permanent Excavation is necessary to
provide the conveyance of the 100 Yeaz Storm Event. SurFace Water Impacts consist of 80
lineaz feet ! 0.10 acre of temporary stream impact wluch is the area inside the dewatered channel.
