RE: Mallard Head Country Club Golf Course -185 Mallard Way
Mooresville, NC 28117 Iredell County
Irrigation Water Withdrawal Relocation
Greetings:
Mallard Head Country Club (MHCC) Golf Course is an 18 -hole golf course located on Lake Norman in Mooresville and was originally built in the
late 1970s. With the golf course being adjacent to Lake Norman, the golf installed an irrigation water withdrawal pump when the course was built.
The existing water withdrawal is located at 259 Pintail Run Lane in Mooresville.
Earlier this year, the property owner of the existing water withdrawal location told MHCC that the property would be put up for sale and the
suction line, pump, and pump appurtenances would have to be removed. Therefore, MHCC discussed obtaining an easement and ground lease
agreement with nearby property owners. An adjacent property owner agreed to allow MHCC an easement and a ground lease agreement. The
existing property with the new easement is a vacant lot with a dock and float, and is primarily used for family gatherings.
MHCC desires to relocate their existing withdrawal approximately 300 linear feet south of their existing location. Due to the age of the older
pump, MHCC will be installing a new pump. MHCC hired an irrigation engineer to assist them in choosing a pump that would be the closest to
their previous one while being quiet and reliable. The adjacent property owner will allow them to place the suction line under the existing dock.
The total ground/shoreline disturbance will be minimal. We anticipate the shoreline disturbance at approximately ten linear feet. In order to
relocate the withdrawal, MHCC will have to obtain a Conveyance Permit from Duke Energy. As part of the Conveyance application, MHCC must
provide the Duke Energy recommended agencies and organizations an opportunity to review the proposed project. Duke has instructed us to use
a 15' buffer around the proposed irrigation water pipeline. This yields a proposed Conveyance easement of approximately 1,244 square feet, 0.029
acres.
MHCC follows the Duke Energy Low Inflow Protocol (LIP). MHCC also reports their Annual Water Use to North Carolina Division of Water
Resources as required by the General Statute and North Carolina's Administrative Code. MHCC's Facility ID is 0619-0001 with a Recreation Facility
Type. MHCC has already discussed this relocation with Water Resources contact John Barr of NC Department of Environmental Quality. Mr. Barr
intends once approvals are obtained, the withdrawal will keep the same Facility ID. MHCC's existing withdrawal rate is approximately 300,000
gallons per day on average with a maximum of 334,000 gallons per day. This average rate will remain similar at the proposed location. We
anticipate a maximum Average Daily Withdrawal not to exceed 350,000 gallons. Per the pump curve, the pump has a capacity of approximately
380 GPM, 547,200 gallons per day. The proposed withdrawal structure will have openings using screens with openings no larger than one
centimeter. As long as the surface area of the total openings is larger than 1.85 square feet the maximum intake velocity will be less than 0.5 feet
per second. There will be no discharge into Lake Norman, just withdrawal.
The Golf Course hopes to relocate their withdrawal late February.
Please do not hesitate to contact us by phone or e-mail at any time to provide comments and/or clarification. Thank you for your assistance.
Sincerely, 2
C/1 !
