The proposed structure is not bottomless but with the flat grade we expect to be in good shape. Bridging the stream would mean closing NC 113 for an extended period of time and we are trying to avoid that. Just to recap the project history: This needs to be built quickly in the Summer because of construction limitations so cast in place is not an option. Original CSR from Hydro 2014 had a Steel Plate Arch. Scoping requested a precast RCBC however the span needs to be approximately 18’ to match the stream which is wider than the typical width for RCBCs. Therefore we ended up with an arch similar to the DOT design that matches the stream width and is buried. The stream slope is very flat in the stream and I believe the natural bed backfill will be very stable. Let me know if you have further questions.
