Ross Jr., Secretary North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources Coleen H. Sullins, Director Division of Water Quality June 3, 2008 Mr. Mike Pettyjohn, P.E. Division Engineer N.C. Department of Transportation Post Office Box 250 North Wilkesboro, North Carolina 28659 Subject: Inspection US Highway 321 DWQ Project No. 041246 TIP No. R-2237B Caldwell County Dear Mr. Pettyjohn: On May 28, 2008, I visually inspected the construction work on US Highway 321 in Caldwell County and the project appeared to be in fairly good shape. Construction work is progressing mainly at the northern end of the project. The erosion and sedimentation control structures, vegetative covering, mulching and matting appear to be working properly; however, some seeding and matting were a little behind schedule. Please continue to ensure that all sediment and erosion control structures are maintained and that seeding and mulching are performed as needed to protect downstream waters. A copy of the inspection report is attached to this letter. If you have questions, please call me at 828-296-4500. Sincerely, Michael R. No Compliance issues identified: ?Yes ?No If yes, complete the section below: Project appeared to be in fairly good condition. Sediment and erosion control program appears to be in good shape. Seeding, mulching and matting continues in construction areas that have been completed but seeding contractor is a little behind the grading contractor. All fill areas appear to be in good condition. The main work area is the large rock cut, at the S- curves, near the top of the project. A small amount of work is presently taking place at the lower end of the project. There are some small cut and fill areas near the upper end of the project. Some minor sediment and erosion control work needs to be performed all along the proj ect. The rock crusher was being dismantled and moved off site. Some paving operations were underway. Please continue to maintain sediment and erosion control devices and continue with seeding and mulching to protect state surface waters.
