TENNYSUN Secretary Subject: Bridge 129 in Randolph County, SR 2407 over Branch of Sandy Creek Dear Mr. Williams: Please let this serve as written justification as to why a culvert was chosen to replace the subject deteriorated bridge. The location of the existing y-line (Herman Husband Road) is too close to the existing bridge to allow for the minimum length of a guardrail anchor unit to protect vehicles from hitting the parapet wall of a new bridge. For your information, the guardrail anchor unit would need to be a minimum of 50 feet to meet design standards. A proposed bridge would need to be approximately 70 feet in length to satisfy construction and hydraulic design standards. Herman Husband road is approximately 42 feet from the existing bridge. Also, there is some concern about the anticipated Greensboro/Randolph Megasite (planned for this area) generating enough truck traffic to cause problems for our typical cored slab bridge design. A steel girder bridge, which would meet the demands of high volume truck traffic, would not work hydraulically at this location. Thank you for your time and consideration in dealing with this matter. Please let me know if you need additional information. Sincerely . T.F.
