HomeMy WebLinkAbout20160988 Ver 1_Public Notice_20161017 (50)US Army Corps of Engineers , Wilmington District CESAW-OPS PUBLIC NOTICE EMERGENCY DREDGING ACTION WANCHESE HARBOR CHANNEL Portion of Manteo (Shallowbag) Bay, NC Proiect TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: 17 October 2016 The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Wilmington District (Corps), has determined that shoaling conditions exist in the subject section of the Wanchese Harbor Entrance Channel that poses an immediate threat to navigation (Figures 1 and 2). The emergency conditions require the immediate removal of approximately 18,000 cubic yards of fine-grained sandy material from the channel in the vicinity of Range 14A (Figure 3). Current controlling depths are approximately -5 feet mean lower low water (mllw). Removal of the material will allow the safe passage of vessels to and from the harbor. Even though the authorized depth is -12 mllw +2 feet overdepth, emergency dredging will only be performed to a depth of -10 feet (+ 2 feet overdepth) in the identified area. Work will be performed by a Government -owned special purpose hopper dredge and the material will be placed to the west of the Bonner Bridge in the Federal channel (Figure 4). No alternatives to performing the work by Government -owned vessel are available at this time. Work could commence as early as 18 October 2016. The procedures outlined in the 1986 Memorandum of Agreement between the State of North Carolina Division of Environmental Quality and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Wilmington District, were followed to obtain all necessary clearances for the emergency action to take place.
