Structures (6 &7) are designed to cross over Buffalo Creek- adjoining US-70 to US-29 North. NCDOT is permitted to construct a temporary stream crossing with minimal disturbance to the bank and surrounding wetlands until construction is complete. To maintain the integrity of the stream’s bank, NCDOT is responsible for stabilizing the embankment with riprap and fabric. Upon project completion, the stream’s channel and bank shall be restored within its original state. Project Goals: NCDOT’s goal is to establish permanent vegetation that enhances aquatic habitat, connects hydrological connectivity between the stream and the floodplain, reduce any soil erosion pre/post construction and re-establish a protected forested riparian corridor. Vegetation and Precipitation: This area has received approximately 6” of rain over the last two weeks. There has been no evidence of extreme flow events by way of observing the vegetation and matting that was recently established using a native seed mix. It appears that the stream channel has been normal within this reporting period. Stream Stability and Function: NCDOT has stabilized the embankment by extending riprap along the right and left sides of the stream to reduce any impact to channel and surrounding wetlands. Pictures are attached of this area herein, as well as the stream’s bank within 200 feet up and downstream of the stabilization area. With several rain events over the last two weeks, we have not seen any substantial implications of erosion or disturbance of the stream at this time. Continuing Management: We will continue to monitor the stream’s embankment bi-weekly to ensure minimal impacts to the wetlands area with majority of runoff being diverted to tiered skimmer basin (ID.-11.1). As the Contractor continues to construct the bridges at Buffalo Creek, NCDOT will continue to temporary seed and mulch disturbed areas, especially those near the creek, as needed. Once activities are complete under the bridge, we can approach final grading where permanent seeding and mulching will take place.
