dredging.pdf
Good day,
This is a courtesy email to give agencies a heads up that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is seeking emergency
authorization from the South Atlantic Division (SAD) to emergency dredge a portion of the authorized channel to
Wanchese Harbor that is currently under immediate threat to navigation. Attached images show pre-storm conditions
and post-storm shoaling due to Hurricane Matthew. Work to remove approximately 18,000 CYs of material will be
performed by a Government owned hopper dredge, and emergency dredging will be performed to a depth of -12 feet
mlw in the identified area.
Dredged material will be disposed of in the Federal Channel adjacent to the north end of Bonner Bridge where water
depths are currently -22 feet MLW. Details of the disposal area are currently being finalized. Work is expected to take
15 days to complete.
The procedures outlined in the 1986 Memorandum of Agreement between the North Carolina Division of Coastal
Management and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Wilmington District are being followed to obtain all necessary
clearances for the emergency action to take place. State Water Quality Cert #3905 authorizes emergency maintenance
dredging (attached). We will continue coordination with agencies first thing Monday morning.
Thank you,
Emily Hughes
