Thank you for your letter of April 30, 2008 expressing concerns about the possible effects of the Alcoa
Power Generating, Inc. projects on the Yadkin River on water quality in the Davidson County and nearby
areas. As you probably know, the Division of Water Quality published a Public Notice about this project in the
Stanly News and Record on April 17, 2008. Upon review of the comments submitted by the public, APGI
eventually withdrew their original application and then resubmitted a new application on May 8, 2008.
In response to the information received during the public notice and a review of the most recent
application, the Division has just sent a letter dated May 23, 2008 to APGI to place the project on hold until we
receive additional information regarding water quality from the discharge from Narrows (Badin) dam and from
sediment near the swimming area in Badin Lake. I have copied you on that letter so you should be receiving a
copy under separate cover. Once APGI supplies the required information, then their application will be
complete. At that time, I will need to publish a new Public Notice to seek public comment on the new
application (including the additional information that APGI must submit). I will make certain that you receive a
copy of that Public Notice so you can comment on that new application at that time. If you would like an
electronic copy of the complete application (after APGI responds to our on-hold letter), please let us know and
we can make a copy for your review.
