Annual Avg Daily Traffic (veh/hr/day): Desi n/Future: 1,365 Year: 2036 Existin : 815 Year: 2016 General Project Narrative: The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has proposed to replace Randolph County Bridge #371 along Allred Road (SR 2182). There is one proposed major (Description of Minimization of Water structure involved with the bridge replacement. The proposed structure, along Penwood Branch, is a 1@ 32'-9"x12'-0" Aluminum Box Culvert. This is an existing stream crossing Quality Impacts) location. In the project area, Penwood Branch is a FEMA Redelineated Detailed (Zone AE) studied stream as listed in the effective Randolph County FIS. This structure has been designed to have as little environmental and surface water impacts as possible. Channel improvements were made for the proposed aluminum culvert design. Excavation was kept to a minimum and proposed stream channels were tied into the existing stream with as little impact as possible. Where excavation is necessary, geotextile and rip-rap were utilized for bank stabilization in an attempt to reduce streambank erosion. A low flow channel inside the culvert was designed to approximately match the stream width to maintain the normal flow width, depth and velocity of the stream. This will maintain sediment transport to provide a stable stream during bankful discharge. Floodplain benches were designed on both sides of the culvert to reduce shear stress on stream bottom during high flow storm events. Interior baffles and notches were designed for use within the culvert to stabilize the stream bed due to the steep longitudinal stream slope.
