~~V 6 - 206 Sediment Impact to Stream
Catawba County, NC

On October 18, 2006, Alan Johnson met with Chris Huysman of Wetland and Natural Resources
(consultant for Neill Grading) to inspect the on-going stream clean-up/impact at the subject site. During the
inspection, it was noted that the cross vane immediately below the culvert/plunge pool was improperly
constructed. Observations of the sediment removal from the stream indicated that there was still a considerable
amount of sediment remaining in the channel. Depth of sediment ranged from 6" to 24" in places. The
inspection showed that the upper section of the stream channel (between the plunge pool and old culvert
approximately 100 ft. down stream) still required sediment removal. The sediment accumulated in the middle
segment (below the old culvert and near the point of the "draw" coming from the Poppleman site) of the stream
had been satisfactorily removed. The bottom segment (to the property line) still showed accumulations of
sediment.
In order to complete the cleanup efforts at the site the following steps are required:
^ The cross vane at the plunge pool must be properly installed and functioning to the regional
office's approval.
A temporary check dam will need to be placed at the downstream property line. Every other
week or within 24 hours of a t/2" rain event the dam will be checked and accumulated sediment
removed. At the end of 6 months, the stream shall be reevaluated and any remaining sediment
should be removed from the channel along with the dam. You are required to notify the regional
office immediately prior to removal of the dam to allow inspection of the stream channel.
The old culvert currently in the stream shall be removed and the stream restored to its original
pattern, dimension, and profile. Cross vanes (< /= 6" elevation) may be used to prevent head
cutting of the stream. Please submit a "restoration plan" and/or schematic for the proposed
work.
