Periodic maintenance dredging of the settling basin is needed to ensure adequate flow of water through the discharge canal pumps. Maintenance dredging in this area will restore the original settling basin depth and has been required and permitted previously. This temporary maintenance dredging activity is required to remove approximately 60,000 cubic yards of silt material which has accumulated in the settling basin of the discharge canal pump station. The area of the discharge canal (a permitted waste water treatment facility) to be disturbed during the dredging activity is approximately 4.13 acres. The deposited material will be removed and retained in two spoil ponds located on high ground adjacent to the discharge canal. Attached to the submittal are photographs of the upland spoil area, several revised pages of the PCN,and a check to the Division of Water Quality to cover the processing fee. If you have any question or need any further information please contact me at(919)546-7457. Sincerely, Stephen G.Cahoon Sr. Environmental Specialist Progress Energy Carolinas, Inc. Provide a written description of the proposed impacts: No impacts to waters of the state; maintenance dredging, will remove sediment around the discharge structure of the canal. The dredging project will remove sediment build-up and restore the settling basin to its original contours. 2. Individually list wetland impacts. Types of impacts include, but are not limited to mechanized clearing, grading, fill, excavation, flooding, ditching/drainage, etc. For dams, se ar ely list impacts due to both structure and flood*n .
