Subject: Duke Energy- Sutton Plant, Temperature monitoring station
Hi John and Jennifer,
I wanted to make you aware of an upcoming project at Sutton Plant. At the end of last year, we received a new NPDES
wastewater permit requiring us to install a temperature monitoring station within the cooling pond (Sutton
Lake). Currently we are looking at deploying a buoy with sensor equipment (see attached). The buoy will be located at
the location shown on the attached photo. I have shared the design with NC WRC and they did not have any comments
on the design of the monitoring station.
We believe that installation of a monitoring station such as this would fall under a NWP 5 (Scientific Measurement
Devices) and WQ3883 . Anchoring of the buoy would be evaluated once the equipment is onsite, however the vendor has
stated that these devices are typically anchored to the bottom of the pond with about 10' of galvanized chain and a
deadweight or pyramid anchor. As required by the permit, we do not believe this equipment would cause more than a
minimal impact to navigation.
Neither the NWP 8 nor the WQP3883 requires the submittal of a PCN, but I wanted to bring the project to your
attention. Please let me know if you have any questions or comments.
Thanks in advance,
Toya

The EMM68 buoy is lightweight and
easy to deploy from shore or small boat
EMM68 buoy supports a single water
quality instrument, such as a YS16600
V2-4 sonde, positioned inside the
subsurface pipe
EMM68 Buoy
Quick and Easy Access to Water Quality Data
The EMM68 buoy provides a quickly deployable water quality monitor-
ing platform with remote telemetry. The system can be lifted into place
by two people, reducing deployment and maintenance costs—while
still maintaining a secure buoy that is difficult to steal or vandalize. And
the entire system can be installed without divers, allowing for complete
serviceability from a small boat or watercraft.
Collect data in waters previously out of reach. The EMM68 buoy is an
economical alternative to obtaining site access to install permanent
fixtures on bridge pilings and piers.
Receive remote data
Two data delivery systems are available to send data from any YSI sonde.
Basic data delivery sends a raw data file to your computer, while the web -
enabled option posts data directly to a public or private web site.
Advantages of remote data delivery:
• Save you unnecessary trips into the field, reducing operating costs
• Make you aware of changing conditions as they occur, improving
response time
• Match your calibration and maintenance schedules to actual sensor
performance, reducing consumables
Ideal for monitoring in these applications
• Baseline studies
• Construction and dredging
• Dye -tracing studies
• Emergency response
• Fisheries
• Industrial sites
• Non -point source/TMDL
• Point source/discharge
• Stormwater & CSO
• Source water
• University/research
Custom systems available
Contact YSI's Integrated Systems & Services division to discuss your
specific monitoring application. We offer a variety of buoy platforms
which can be tailored to fit your needs. Our other systems are suited for
deployment in high-energy environments and for long-term monitoring
projects.
