This is a design/construction question that I've flipped back to the consultant. I'll let you know what they tell me. I
suspect, however, that it has to do with the actual construction. While the banks may be stable, there appears to be a
significant amount of disturbance that will be necessary, including work within what appears to be rather steep banks -
which would necessitate the use of the rip rap armoring to insure long term stability.

Good point, Brian. The Corps would be interested in any additional minimization efforts as well.

Nikki,

I visited this proposed bridge replacement site today. The downstream side of the crossing is heavily wooded and the
stream appears to be fairly stable. Aside from the floodplain bench, is it possible to reduce the amount of rip rap
proposed for this bridge to culvert conversion? I understand that there will be some clearing involved in the
construction of the flpl bench, but it seems unnecessary to armor the bank that much when there is strong woody veg
on the banks. Thanks!
