This will eliminate or reduce the ongoing erosion that is occurring on the peninsula that extends into the entrance to the cove at this location. Satellite imaging has provided evidence of the rapid retreat of the lake -side shoreline and the slow erosion of the cove - side shoreline. This will be accomplished through geotextiles, riprap, coconut fiber rolls, and grass vegetation. 5068 16TH ST DR NE Hickory NC 28658 Street address code city State zip This project will be beneficial to the Catawba River Basin at large. With sedimentation being the most common water quality issue in the Catawba, all sources of erosion and sediment -laden runoff into the lakes and tributaries are detrimental. The importance of mitigating erosion cannot be stressed enough and this project seeks to do just that by stopping the erosion through a number of means. By utilizing geotextiles, the remaining soil on the peninsula will be impounded by creating a physical medium to provide coverage for the soil. Riprap stonework will be placed on the surface; this will serve to break up the energy of waves as they intercept the shoreline and to hold down the geotextiles and soil. By increasing the amount of vegetation, using brush matterasing of plants, we will be able to create the means necessary to absorb wave energy and to sink roots into the soil in order to provide structure, which will hold the soil together and encourage the peninsula as a whole to have a natural presence of vegetation. Not only will this project serve to protect the Catawba River from the introduction of additional soil sediments to the water column but will also preserve the presence of the peninsula. Based off of satellite data from 1998 to 2014, the peninsula has lost more than 100 square yards on average per year. Project Details This shoreline stabilization project involves the installation of riprap stonework, planting of vegetation, and temporary coconut fiber rolls'. The eroding shoreline is located on Lake Hickory at the mouth of the Snow Creek Cove. Several factors are contributing to the ongoing erosion of this location: geography, topography, and soil type. Geographically, this peninsula extends well into the mouth of the cove, which causes the peninsula to effectively act as a mechanical breakwater for the wave energy that is entering the cove. Topographically, this area is considerably more flat than the rest of the surrounding area. The surrounding land meets the water with a steep slope right up to the waters edge while this area of land has a very low slope and extends well past the rest of the area out into the water. The final reason is the soil type of the surrounding area and of the lot itself. The lot is a small pocket of Barnestable Sandy Loam and the surrounding area is overwhelmingly made up of Wilkes Series soil, which is a more rocky soil type, which is more stable when faced with breaking waves. The installation of a shoreline stabilization project alog r 1000 feet of shoreline will effectively reduce the erosion and improve water quality in he local area of Lake Hickory. Proposed improvements would involve surrounding the outside of the peninsula with coconut fiber rolls, lining of the perimeter of the peninsula with a lightweight permeable geotextile material that will allow sufficient water flow for plants and for drainage but will prevent large amounts of sediment from eroding away. (See included nonwoven sample). Rocks will be placed on top of the geotextile, and then vegetative presence of grasses will be reestablished through brush-mattressing. The stabilization project will take place over the summer of 2016 The construction will occur in several steps: -The site will be roughly surveyed and marked -A sediment fence will be installed -A layer of rip rap will be laid -Sod knife will be used to pull back 24 inches of grass. -Area of geotextile that will be under the peeled sod will be scored to allow rooting A geotextile will be installed from 24 inches past the crest of the slope to 36 inches past the low water mark. -Coconut Fiber rolls will be installed -Gravel and organic material laid on top of geotextile -Brushmattress planting of grass vegetation with thick cut sod -Slate rock laid intermittently to hold down remaining soil and brushmattress -A geotextile will be installed from 24 inches past the crest of the slope to 18 inches past the low water mark. -Plants will be watered to encourage growth. -10 days after planting, the sediment fence will be removed. The site will be marked with spray paint to identify the top of the stabilization area. Workers will install the sedimentation fence around the perimeter of the work area. The sedimentation will ensure that no sediment leaves the area. When the sedimentation fence has been installed, work will begin to install rock and to cut back sod. Geotextile will be laid from the top of the sod cut to 3 feet past the low water level. The area that will be below the sod will be scored to allow for root permeation into the soil. Coconut fiber rolls will be installed and staked through the bottom of the geotextile to create a barrier for wave action to encourage plant growth. Riprap will be piled on top of the geotextile and then brushmattress planting will take place to create a presence of vegetation. After this, slate rocks will be placed with 2-3 inch spacing to hold down the soil and to break wave energy. P The stabilization area will be approximately,6Wfeet in length. The following materials will be used: Riprap, gravel, grass seeds, 3 ozy geotextile, sedimentation fence, organic soil, sod, brushmatteressinglorganic material, slate rock The following tools will be used: Shovels, hammer, sod knives, wheel barrel, aerator, seeder, tape measures, and scissors. r` .
