The APE of this project is defined as 200 feet from each end of the bridge and 50 feet from centerline. SUMMARY OF HISTORIC ARCHICTECTURE AND LANDSCAPES REVIEW � There are no National Register-listed or Study Listed properties within the project's area of potential effects. � There are no properties less than fifty years old which are considered to meet Criteria Consideration G within the project's area of potential effects. � There are no properties within the project's area of potential effects. � There are properties over fifty years old within the area of potential effects, but they do not meet the criteria for listing on the National Register. � There are no historic properties present or affected by this project. (Attach any notes or documents as needed.) Date of field visit: March 5, 2014 Description of review activities, results, and conclusions: Review of HPO quad maps, historic designations roster, and indexes was undertaken on March 12, 2010. Based on this review, there are no existing NR, LD, DE, or SS properties in the Area of Potential Effects. Review of the Rockingham County ArcGis Tax Parcel Website revealed that one property in the APE dates to 1994. A finding of No Survey Required was issued. In a letter dated January 9, 2014 the property owner, Craig Head, informed NCDOT of the presence of mill remains on his property. On March 5, 2014 an NCDOT Architectural Historian and Archeologist conducted a site visit to assess the significance of the ruins. The stack-stone foundation of a former mill is located more than 250 feet from the east end of the bridge down a slope off of the north side of SR 2359. In addition to the stone foundation there is evidence of the mill race and remnants of the dam. Other than the foundation there are no building structures extant. The absence of complete structures negatively impacts the integrity of the site; therefore Hisloric Archi�ec(w•e and Landscapes NO H/STORlC PROPERT/ES PRESF.NT OR AFFCCTED farm for Minor Transportation Projec(s as Qualifred in the 2007 Programmalic Agreemenl. Page 1 of 5 the mill ruins are not considered eligible for National Register listing. The NCDOT archaeologist registered the site with the Office of State Archaeology and it has been assigned a site number. The site is outside the APE for archaeology. Worsham Mill (RK 1493) is a National Register eligible grist mill in Rockingham County and stands as an excellent intact representative of 20th century gristmills in the piedmont region of North Carolina. No other historic structures are located in the APE and no historic properties will be affected by this project.
