The replacement bridge is assumed to be proposed at generally the same location and alignment. For the purposes of the archaeological review the proposed project area is listed as 633.6 feet long (slighdy more than 193.12 meters) and extends right-of-way (RO� width from 60 feet to 100 feet (30.48 mctcrs). Thus, the area of potential effects (/1PE) is estimated at roughl5� 1.45 acres (nearly .59 hectares). Despite the potential for excessive slope and disturbances associated with landscape development to limit the potential for intact archaeological deposits, an archaeological reconnaissance to determine the necessiry for and scope of more intensive archaeological invesrigarions was recommended. On October 16, 2013, NCDOT archaeologists, Shane Petersen and Brian Overton, conducted an archaeological reconnaissance of the project area. All quadrants of investigations around Bridge No. 126 were visually inspected. Much of the area to the south of SR 1526 appeared to have been disturbed by an expanded easement for utiliries alongside existing ROW. In general, several axeas surrounding Bridge No. 126 were either excessively sloped or areas that appeared subject to frequent flooding. The previous alignment of Gray Road could be seen several meters north of the e�sting alignment on the east side of Lick Creek. This previous alignment can been seen on the 1968 USGS Caldwell, NC quadrangle, 7.5-minute series topographic map. This alignment crosses upstream of the current bridge (the earlier bridge footings are still visible) and the curves back to the e�sting alignment at the base of the toe-slope west of the creek. The relatively level portion of the toe-slope northwest of Bridge No. 126 was considered to possess some potential for archaeological remains. On February 27, 2014, NCDOT archaeologists, Shane Petersen and Brian Overton, conducted subsurface testing in the area northwest of Bridge No. 126. Three shovel test pits were excavated on a 15-meter interval within the APE north of SR 1526. This transect was placed 15 meters north of centerline on SR 1526. The recorded soil profiles from these subsurface tests share some similarities with the recorded profiles for Tarrus Silt Loam soils (as mapped in the area), but were interpreted as slightly deflated in the surface strata. Only one definitive artifact was recovered from Shovel Test Pit No. 2: a broken bifacial thinning flake (missing the distal end) of inetavolcanic tuf£ Two pieces of quartz shatter were also recovered but are unlikely to be cultural in origin. This location was recorded as an isolated find (310r666).
