As part of a Water Re-Route Project being undertaken to assure compliance with the Federal Coal Ash Residual (CCR) rule for this facility, DEC will be closing the Constructed Wetlands. Wastewater currently directed to the wetlands will be redirected to the ash basin and then to a new retention basin being constructed in the footprint of the current wastewater treatment system wetlands. More details about that basin will be provided in the upcoming submittal for NPDES renewal later this year. This work does not change the final outfall discharge point of any flows at Belews Creek. Details of the current status of the treatment units and the current plan for closure are: • Constructed Wetlands. Constructed Wetlands receive flow from consolidated sump which includes collection of wastewater from the sanitary waste system, stormwater collection pond (stormwater runoff from gypsum and limestone stockpiles), limestone unloading facility sump, and leachate and contact stormwater from FGD residual and Craig Road Landfills prior to discharge to Ash Basin, The plan for closing the constructed wetlands is remove any residuals and dispose of off-site by a licensed contract disposal firm, than the treatment unit will be replaced with retention basins which will discharge to Dan River through permitted NPDES Outfall 003. Please accept this letter as meeting the permit requirement to provide 90-days notice of closure for a wastewater treatment system. If you have any questions regarding the closure of these treatment units, please contact Joyce Dishmon at(336)394-5524,or via email at Joyce.Dishmon@Duke-Energy.com.
