SUMMARY OF DECLARATION OF DRAFT PROPOSED COAL ASH IMPOUNDMENT
CLASSIFICATION FOR DUKE ENERGY PROGRESS INC. H. F. LEE POWER STATION
Summary of Draft Proposed Classifications
The N.C. Department of Environmental Quality has issued draft proposed classifications for
impoundments at 10 coal ash facilities that were not classified as high risk by the Coal Ash
Management Act of 2014. The department has prepared a written declaration that includes
findings of fact that document and support the initial draft proposed classifications. You may
view the written declaration at the Wayne County Health Department, the Wayne Public Library,
or online at: portal2.ncdenr.or /g web/guest/draft-classifications. The written declaration will also
be available online at www.deq.nc.gov after Feb. 2, 2016.
The draft proposed classification for the H. F. Lee (five impoundments) facility is intermediate
risk.
PUBLIC COMMENTS
The public is encouraged to provide feedback on the draft proposed impoundment
classifications. All comments received by April 18, 2016 will be considered in determining final
impoundment classifications. Written comments may be submitted to: Debra Watts, N.C.
Division of Water Resources, Groundwater Protection Section, N.C. Department of
Environmental Quality, Attn: Debra Watts, 1636 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-1611.
Public comments may also be submitted by sending an email to: leecommentskncdenr.gov.
PUBLIC MEETING
In accordance with state law, the department will hold meetings to receive public comments in
each county where a coal ash facility is located. The public meeting for the H. F. Lee Power
Station in Wayne County will be held at 6 p.m. March 10 at Wayne County Community College
Auditorium, 3000 Wayne Memorial Drive, Goldsboro, NC 27534. Speaker registration will
begin at 5:30 p.m.
