Wheeler, Tracey L SAW; Ward, Garcy; Brittingham, Cathy Subject: Hyde County Bridge #56 Permanent Hand Clearing Gay — Two site visits (on July 22, 2015 & August 12, 2015) by DCM to the Hyde County Bridge #56 over the Long Shoal River on US 264 occurred in order to review environmental impacts associated with bridge replacement as depicted in the NCDOT application for obtaining a CAMA Major Permit. The application/drawings state that four (4) areas would be impacted by "Permanent Hand Clearing" in order for NCDOT maintenance crews to perform cutting on a semi regular basis for inspection and safety reasons. During the site visits DCM observed that the area impacted most (Site 4- 126 sq. ft.) by permanent hand clearing also contained the most pristine example of Coastal Wetlands (Spartina cynosuroides and Juncos roemerianus) located in the project area. This email is a follow up to a phone conversation between DCM and NCDOT on August 13, 2015 to discuss the possibility of minimization to permanent hand clearing in the vicinity of Site 4. During this conversation NCDOT committed to reducing the permanent hand clearing in Site 4 from 126 sq. ft. to 50 sq. ft. DCM will note the change on the environmental impact drawings and resubmittal is not necessary. Thanks for your time and please contact me with any questions.
