Subject: Biltmore Lake Dredging - Request for Permit Amendment to Include Cove 3
The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) issued the Biltmore Lake Association, Inc. a
permit for mechanical dredging In two coves of Enka Lake (DWR# 16-0230). The lake level has been
lowered and work is currently underway. The operation has been very efficient and work is anticipated to be
complete this week. On behalf of the Biltmore Lake Association, Inc., Altamont Environmental, Inc.
(Altamont) is submitting this letter to request a permit amendment to include the dredging of an additional
cove (Cove 3) in Enka Lake that is also becoming filled with sediment. The previously permitted impacts
were for 0.99 acres and this request is for an additional 0.73 acres. We respectfully request as quick of a
response as possible due to the fact that we are maintaining a lowered water surface elevation in the lake
while waiting for approval to continue the work in Cove 3. Altamont has discussed this amendment with Mr.
Zan Price of the Asheville Regional office of the DEQ. The Army Corps of Engineers has already approved the
request and has mailed Altamont an amended permit.
