STORM WATER DESIGN NARRATIVE
Chatham County, North Carolina
General Description
Briar Chapel is located west of US 15-501 south of Manns Chapel Road and north of
Andrews Store Road in Chatham County, North Carolina. Phase 5 North of the
development will contain approximately 50 acres of the total 1,600 acre development
parcel.
Phase 5 North of the Briar Chapel development consists of 192 single-family residential
lots and associated local residential roadways directly to the west of Briar Chapel -Phase
4, Pod D. Phase 5 North also includes the completion of the Briar Chapel Parkway
residential collector road running westward from its Briar Chapel -Phase 3 tie-in to its
intersection with future Boulder Point Drive.
The completion of Briar Chapel Parkway consists of four (4) separate storm drainage
systems. They are designated with the letters C, D, E and F. System C discharges into
temporary preformed scour hole until the connecting phase is completed. System D
utilizes a splitter box discharging the 1-inch rain event to a temporary preformed scour
hole and the remaining to a flared end section. Systems E and F will discharge into
• permanent preformed scour holes due to constraints of the site. Supporting calculations
for the Briar Chapel Parkway storm water design calculations are detailed in this report
and the attached plans.
Storm Water MethodoloQy
• For each individual storm drainage inlet, a drainage area was measured and a
future impervious surface percentage was derived. A composite C-value was
determined for each inlet's drainage area based on the roadway, sidewalk,
impervious area for various lot sizes and pervious area. This data was later
entered into the hydraulic model and used for the pipe sizing calculations.
• Preformed scour holes (PFSH) designed in accordance with Division of Water
Quality, North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources
(NCDENR) guidelines were utilized for the pipe discharges along the Briar
Chapel Parkway extension. The two PFSH's closest to Boulder Point Drive
are permanent. The two eastern PFSH's are temporary measures, and they
will be removed when storm pipes from future development will carry the
runoff to future ponds.
• The splitter box used for system D sets the discharge pipe to preformed scour
• hole D1.2 at the bottom of the structure. The outlet bypass pipe invert is set at
the headwater elevation for the 1"per hour intensity rain event. This ensures
a that reformed scour hole D1.2 will 1
p co lect all storm event up to and including
the 1"per hour event, with the excess of any larger events flowing out through
the bypass pipe.
The pipes were sized using "Hydraflow Storm Sewers 2008", Version 12.01
by Intelisolve. This program accepts the input data from each inlet, as well as
physical characteristics of the storm system to be designed, and calculates
flow rates and pipe sizes through the system. For rainfall data, an IDF curve
for the 10-year storm event describing the Raleigh-Durham region was used.
For the purpose of sizing the storm pipes, each inlet was modeled to capture
100% of the drainage area flow.
• Culverts aze provided to pass runoff from undeveloped areas that do not
require stormwater treatment. The culverts were sized to pass the 25-year
storm with a HW/D ratio of 1.2 or less. They were checked for the 100-year
flow to verify that the roadway would not be overtopped.
• Velocity dissipaters were designed for two road crossing culverts in the
southwestern part of the site in addition to one dissipater at each FES for
System A and System B to prevent erosion and scour at the stormwater ponds.
The dissipaters are designed using the NYDOT method. The velocity
dissipaters are a permanent feature of the storm drainage system.
• Median road side ditches were designed to intercept storm water flows before
reaching the collector roads. Supporting calculations have been sent for
NCDOT review and approval, available upon request.
