Cc: john vilas (john.vilas@mcgillengineers.com); Fox, Tim Subject: Valley River Stream Stabilization Hi David, - I have reviewed. the information sent to me on the Valley River Bank Stabilization project in Cherokee County, which is an after -the -fact permit application to stabilize 120 feet of streaxnbank'on. the Valley River in. order to protect a sewer line in Murphy. The Valley River at this location is part of the Valley River Aquatic Habitat, a .natural area rated High due to the richness of rare species it contains. In the vicinity of -the project, there are Sicklefin Redhorse (Moxostoma sp., US Candidate, NC Threatened), Christy's Elimia [Elinda christyi, US Federal Species of Concern (FSC), NC Endangered], Rainbow [Villosa iris, NC Special Concern (SC)], Wavyrayed Lampmussel (Lampsilis fasciola, NC SC), Longsohd [1'uscortaia subrotunda, US FSC, NC Significantly Rare (SR)], and Highland Shiner (Notropis mrcropteryx, NC SR). We appreciate the retention of bank vegetation and encourage the Town to plant additional native shrubs and trees wherever possible on the river banks. We also urge thein to consider using bioengineering methods for any future bank stabilization on the Valley River. Thank you for the opportunity to review and comment on this project.
