The existing 36' L X 27` double span, timber deck on timber joists with timber caps and piles at end and interior bents is structurally deficient and will be replaced with a new 60' L X 30' W, single span, cored slab bridge at the same location. An off-site detour will be utilized during construction. There are two small wetlands located within the project area (WA and WB); however, there are no impacts proposed to either wetland area. TENNYSON Secretary stream impacts for streambank stabilization (i.e, rip rap will not be witlun the thalweg of the channel). There are no deck drains proposed on this bridge. The project drainage system consists of a drop inlet at the west approach. Discharges from these pipe outlets will be attenuated on riprap pads located outside the riparian buffer areas and will be diffused by existing topographic conditions before flowing to the riparian buffer. There are no utility relocations proposed with tlus bridge replacement. Proposed Riparian Buffer impacts include 2,729 square feet in Zone 1 and 1,244 square feet in Zone 2 to accommodate the bridge. There is no habitat for, nor recorded species of, the Small Whorled Pogonia within the project boundaries. The Bald Eagle is protected in every county in North Carolina under the Bald and Gold Eagle Protection Act; however, no suitable feeding/water source is located within one mile of the project study area to support Bald Eagle habitat. Also, Mr. Gary Jordan (USFWS) recently released the Programmatic Conference Opinion (PCO) for the recently listed Northern Long Eared Bat (NLEB). This opinion, states in part, that "... it is the Service's corafer•erace opinlon that NCDOT activities in easterrz North Carolina (Divisions 1-8), as proposed, are not likely to jeopardize the continued existence of the NLEB.
