Describe the attachments or
comments:
As work on the dune reconstruction has started on Ocracoke, NCDOT has determined the sandbag alignment
is in need of additional repairs from overwash events in recent months. One section is shown on the attached
map. There are also random bags along the entire alignment that need to be replaced. It's estimated at most,
50 additional sandbags would be required for the repairs. A revised cross section from the dune reconstruction
is attached for the additional 50 sandbags. As the sub -contractor is currently onsite working on the dune
repairs, expediting this request would be greatly appreciated. The sub -contractor is the same one that installed
the replacement sandbags earlier this year.
The project consists of the installation of approx. 50 replacement sandbags in the existing sandbag alignment.
Sandbags would be tan in color and would be hydraulically filled from the swash zone of the adjacent beach
with approx. 280 cubic yards of sand. Remnant and damaged sandbags would be removed from the site and
properly disposed of. New sandbags would be placed on top of the existing bottom layer of sandbags. The
existing alignment of sandbags would not be extended, and the sandbag structure would not exceed 20 feet in
width or 6 feet in height. The 3 environmentally sensitive areas identified by NIPS would not be impacted by the
hydraulic dredging operation. NCDOT will continue to coordinate with NPS staff for nesting activity in the area
through November 15th. The area of impact would be approx. 0.028 acres and generally coincide with the ares
previously impacted by sandbag repairs earlier this year.
