The collection system consists of both public and private sewer lines and pump
stations to transport the wastewater to the treatment plant. Durham County owns and
maintains approximately seventy miles of sewer piping and eleven pump stations.
All pump stations are equipped with automatic dialers that will notify an operator
when an alarm occurs. Eight of the eleven pump stations have stationary generators
for emergency power. There is a portable generator owned by Durham County for
use at stations without a permanent generator.
In an effort to keep citizens informed and to maintain compliance with state
requirements, Durham County has prepared this report summarizing the performance
of the County owned wastewater treatment plant and associated wastewater collection
system. The Treatment facility is located on NC Hwy 55 in southern Durham
County, and serves customers both inside and outside the Durham City limits,
including the Durham County portion of the Research Triangle Park (RTP).
Woodard & Curran Inc. operates and maintains the Triangle Wastewater Treatment
Plant and collection system for Durham County. The facility is a 6.0 MGD extended
aeration treatment facility discharging into Northeast Creek in southern Durham
County. The treatment facility was originally built in the early 1960’s with major
upgrades in the mid 1970’s and mid 1980’s. The facility serves commercial,
industrial, and residential customers including the section of the Research Triangle
Park located inside Durham County. The responsibility of operating the treatment
facility includes the permitting and monitoring of the industries that discharge into the
sewer system.
