Durham County owns and maintains approximately seventy miles of sewer piping and eleven pump stations. All pump stations are equipped with automatic dialers that will notify an operator when an alarm occurs. Eight of the eleven pump stations have stationary generators for emergency power. There is a portable generator owned by Durham County for use at stations without a permanent generator. In an effort to keep citizens informed and to maintain compliance with state requirements, Durham County has prepared this report summarizing the performance of the County owned wastewater treatment plant and associated wastewater collection system. The Treatment facility is located on NC Hwy 55 in southern Durham County, and serves customers both inside and outside the Durham City limits, including the Durham County portion of the Research Triangle Park (RTP). Woodard & Curran Inc. operates and maintains the Triangle Wastewater Treatment Plant and collection system for Durham County. The facility is a 6.0 MGD extended aeration treatment facility discharging into Northeast Creek in southern Durham County. The treatment facility was originally built in the early 1960’s with major upgrades in the mid 1970’s and mid 1980’s. The facility serves commercial, industrial, and residential customers including the section of the Research Triangle Park located inside Durham County. The responsibility of operating the treatment facility includes the permitting and monitoring of the industries that discharge into the sewer system. No Reportable Spill Permit Limit 400/100ml ----------( was 99 71 o/o comp|jant for the reporting period. There were seventeen (17) violations out of five thousand nine hundred (5900) sample analyses. Below is a summary of the types and number of violations: ❖ 12 Mercury Violations 3 Cyanide Violations 1 Fecal Coliform Violations 1 Bromodichloromethane [Mercury and Cyanide are chemical parameters that pass through from sources and not treated by this facility. A Consent Order was issued for the facility and seven industrial sources where analyses indicated mercury discharges ] The WWTP experienced no bypass flow during this reporting period. The collection system experienced four (4) reportable spills during this year, with an estimated total of fourteen thousand, nine hundred (14,900) gallons spilled. The sewer line was flushed with water, the spill area cleaned and lime was applied. NCDENR was contacted in regards to spill as required. Apr. 2002 ________________________Compliant 1 Reportable Spill Description of Spill: On April 5, 2002, @ an easement behind 3201 Appling Way, a spill caused by a grease blockage in line resulting in 9000 gallons reaching surface water. Grease blockage was removed. NCDENR was contacted in regards to spill as required. Feb. 2002 Compliant 1 Reportable Spill Description of Spill: On February 26,2002 @ the Fairfield Pump Station, 809 Scott King Road, a spill caused by pumps being accidentally turned off at the pump station causing a wet well overflow resulting in 5400 gallons reaching surface water. A portable pump was set up to pump spill from a storm drainage ditch to Fairfield Pump Station. NCDENR was contacted in regards to spill as required._ _ Description of Spill: On January 31, 2002 @ 5113 Shagbark Drive, a spill caused by a grease blockage accumulating on pipe fragment debris from a sprinkler system resulted in 200 gallons reaching surface water. Debris and grease were removed from the line. NCDENR was contacted in regards to spill as required. IV. Notification CertificationIIL Date I certify under penalty of law that this report is complete and accurate to the best of my knowledge. I further certify that this report has been made available to the users or customers of the named system and that those users have been notified of its availability. The Performance Annual Report for the Durham County Triangle Wastewater Treatment Plant, July 2001 - June 2002 was forwarded to the North Carohna Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
