Project Plans 1.Schieffelin Road Lift Station & Forcemain Description Schieffelin Road Lift Station (SRLS) is located on Schieffelin Rd, approximately 0.33 South of Center Street at Pine Hill Business Center. SRLS was constructed in 1997 as part of a sewer extension to serve Pine Hill Business Center (DWQ Permit No. WQ0012668). SRLS consisted of a duplex vacuum prime pumping system, a 6' diameter x 21'-6" deep wet well, and approximately 2500 linear feet of 6" PVC forcemain. The original pumping equipment remains in service today. SRLS is equipped with a 55 kW propane powered standby generator and automatic transfer switch. The 6" force main routes West on Schieffelin Road and discharges into a gravity sewer manhole at the intersection of Schieffelin Road and Marco Drive. (Figure 01, 02 & 03). Page 1 of 8 .f lI - t i R. The major improvement in this permit modification will be to demolish the existing vacuum prime pumping equipment, control panel, and associated piping and convert the pumping system to a less maintenance-intensive submersible pumping system with an above-ground enclosure to house the valves, inter- connecting piping, and pump control panel (Figure 04, 05 & 06). Forcemain Analysis & System Curve A system curve was generated to aid in the selection of the new pumps. (Figure 07). A Hazen-Williams c-factor of 120 and a static head of 23' was used to generate the system curve. The forcemain discharge elevation is the high point in the system at 433', and the "Pump Off" water level elevation is 410' equaling a difference of 23' for the static lift component of the system. Historical Flows The Town of Apex provided the last calendar year of daily flows to the pump station from their SCADA system's calculated drawdown. This data indicated the ADF to be 25,000 gallons (17 gpm), and the peak day to be 80,000 gallons (56 gpm). C. SRLS Firm Capacity Increase The existing SRLS pumps are rated for 220gpm (single pump flow) resulting in a firm station capacity of.32 MGD. Although there will be no new wastewater generated by this project, the proposed submersible pumps are designed to output more than the existing pumps, which will increase both the firm capacity of the lift station and the scouring velocities in the 6" forcemain. The new pumps (Figure 08 &09) are sized such the existing utility service and existing standby generator can start and operate both pumps simultaneously. Also, pump selection criteria included maintaining 2-8 pumping cycles per hour at average daily flow. Additionally, it will increase the velocity in the 6" forcemain from 2.5 feet per second to 4 feet per second. This will keep the forcemain scoured. Pumping Station Design, (3rd edition) states, "The lowest design velocity for raw wastewater is 2 ft s to keep grit moving, and a peak daily velocity of 3.5 ft s is desirable to resuspend solids." Page 7 of 8 III. Requested Permitting Action The requested permitting action for this application is to change the pumping system from vacuum prime pumps to submersible pumps and increase the firm station capacity from .32 MGD to .50 MGD. All previously permitted items shall remain in the permit. Because no new wastewater will be generated in this project, the receiving sewer was not evaluated and would be evaluated in subsequent permit modifications that generate new wastewater. Iv. Summary ■ This project consists of the following improvements to SRLS: o Demolish existing vacuum prime pumps, piping, and control panel. o Installation of new submersible pumps with stainless steel discharge piping to the existing forcemain. o Installation of new above ground enclosure to house new plug valves, check valves, inter-connecting piping, and pump control panel. ■ The existing generator is adequately sized to start and run both new pumps simultaneously. ■ The new pumps will change the station firm capacity from .32 MGD to .50 MGD. ■ Pump cycles will be maintained to 2-8 cycles per hour. ■ The rated flow of the new pumps will change the forcemain velocity from 2.5 ft/s to 4 ft/s. ■ There will ne no wastewater generated by this project.
