Dear Sierra,
Thank you for your call last Tuesday.
A true economic development story, Halil Ulukaya bought Origin Food Group in early March 2020
with 30 or so employees; his leadership has grown it to 100+ now. As the only dairy processing
facility in or near North Carolina's #1 milk producing county of Iredell, Origin received a $3,000,000
state grant for City of Statesville sewer extension.
Fortunately, a housing developer is covering the estimated $1,500,000 shortfall in bringing the
sewer. The developer gained rezoning and has negotiated a sewer agreement with City officials that
is on the City attorney's desk for final approval. Their in-house construction team estimates
connection to Origin next spring.
On a call in February 2023 with Ramesh, Nancy Keith, our Extension Director, Michael Shepherd, our
Environmental Sr. Specialist with NCDA and past and incoming President of the North Carolina
Irrigation Society, and others, it was determined that, as a bridge to that future sewer connection,
Michael, would write a plan for our land and irrigation system. Attached is his extensive plan which
allows much greater capacity than Origin's rinse water volume.
On March 15, 2023, Nancy emailed me to say that Ramesh only needed an agreement between
Origin Foods and Stamey Farms for a termed disposal of wastewater including volumes per day. The
agreement was submitted that afternoon and included in the Plan.
With municipal sewer imminent, Michael has in place the endorsed Closure Plan for our
lagoon. Attached.
In addition to Michael, Nancy and Daniel Overcash of NCDA's Agronomic Division have provided
valuable insight throughout the process.
Our application records you requested are attached. There has been no over application of nutrients
or discharge into streams.
Also attached is a recent picture of our beautiful soybean crop with irrigation wheel marks.
Origin's importance to the dairy industry of North Carolina was highlighted by a $2,279,000 equipment
grant from NCDA. An article in Expansion Solutions Magazine:
