Our office is looped in on public interest for a Public Hearing to be held. By way of this e-mail, Derek Denard with DWR's central office permitting program is looped in on your message. We're referring folks calling and inquiring about matters to the Permit Public Notice page (referenced above) which provides direction for the process to provide comments. So far, from those that I have spoken with, including a caller this morning, a common point of contention revolves around salinity concerns (fresh water discharging to perceived brackish waters). If interested, you'll find the electronic permit folder at the link below for Permit No. NC0089168. Public Laserfiche Portal link: https://edocs.deq.nc.gov/WaterResources/Browse.aspx? id=537214&d bid=0&repo=WaterResources Feel free to call if you'd like to discuss the Martin Marietta Vanceboro Quary operation. Robert, I just got a call from a residence at Blounts Creek upset that Martin Marietta is planning on building/excavating a mine at Blounts Creek. They (residents and Sound Keepers) are concerned about the 10 mgd discharge from the proposed mine and that DEQ has approved the plan. My understanding is that they are requesting a public hearing. I also got a copy of salinity levels collected in 2012. 14,000 feet downstream from Herring Run the salinity was 6.8 at 8 feet deep and they are saying the predicted salinity at that depth, considering the dilution, would be 5.09. 1 am assuming they are measuring the salinity as PPT. From the tone of the resident I got the phone call from, the feeling is that this would be an ecological disaster. Steve Steve Gabel Area Specialized Agent - Aquaculture NCSU GALS, NC Coop. DEQ Public Notice: https://www.deq.nc.gov/news/events/notice-intent-issue-npdes-wastewater-permit- nc0089168-vanceboro-quarry_ The renewal seems to be generating an increased level of inquiries, at least being directed to the regional office. We're also receiving requests for a Public Hearing. I'm also hearing from callers that Sound Rivers has renewed interest in the mining project, in particular with regards to salinity levels for receiving waters. Sound Rivers coverage: https://soundrivers.org/large-crowd-turns-out-for-blounts-creek-meeting/ With that said and with expectation that permit renewal interests will continue to generate inquiries, we might anticipate some level of upcoming media attention/inquiries. All is just an FYI for now. We'll let you know if we hear anything from our local media friends. Please let me know if there are any questions. Thanks David May, L.G.
