Inspection Summary:
A site visit of the Shallotte wastewater treatment facility (WWTF) was performed on September 4, 2024. Present during the
visit were Matthew Henry with Brunswick County and Bryan Lievre with NCDEQ. The purpose of the visit was to update
information for the facility following a compliance inspection of the facility which was performed on September 22, 2023.
Three items were identified as needing to be addressed as a result of the September 22, 2023 compliance inspection.
Monthly discharge monitoring reports were needing to be provided, a copy of the annual soil report needed to be completed
and berms of Lagoons 1, 2 and 3 needed to be mowed. Most of the monthly reports have been submitted, a copy of the
annual soil results was viewed while onsite and the berms of all three lagoons had been mowed.
While on -site, additional items were noted:
1. Monitoring wells MW-6 and MW-10 which have intermittent elevated levels of nitrate were inspected. The wells were
both installed as suspected nested stick-up wells, located west of Lagoon 1. Well MW-10 had a well tag which indicated
that the well was screened from 22 to 27 feet below grade and based on their proximity to each other, it is suspected that
well MW-6 is screened at a more shallow depth. Both wells were installed along a downslope which seems to have eroded
away around well MW-10 and for this reason, a recommendation was made to add additional concrete around the surface.
2. Concrete footers for the new influent structure were being poured during the visit.
3. The six inch diameter line to the new spray field had been installed and personnel were present constructing tie-ins from
the main line to each of the individual spray heads.
4. No evidence of monitoring wells SA-1, SA-2 or SA-3 could be found. These wells were proposed to be installed around
the perimeter of the new spray field.
5. The proposed channel between Lagoon 1 and 2 and the pipe connecting Lagoons 2 and 3 had not been installed.
