Aqua North Carolina, Inc. (Aqua) offers the following response to the above-referenced SSO Notice of
Violation.

Aqua’s Response:

On 6/2/2024 Aqua experienced a sewer overflow caused by a blockage in a section of the Neuse Colony
collection system gravity main near 227 Hill Row Lane, Clayton NC. Aqua personnel immediately initiated
corrective actions to mitigate the spill with assistance from an environmental response contractor. A bypass
pump was utilized to pump the wastewater around the blocked area of the gravity main while the blockage
was being addressed. It was discovered that the cause of the blockage was from a homeowner’s sewer
lateral, as well as a brick that was likely dropped into the collection system by a vandal. Lime and straw
were applied to the area surrounding the leak. All manholes in this section of gravity sewer now have
locking manhole covers to prevent future vandalism in this area.
