Thanks for the reply, Eric. We delayed monitoring until winter in an effort to sample in the optimal season. I will
change the language to state that sampling will take place in January throughout the monitoring period. There
has been no disturbance to the existing channel yet and I am planning on baseline sampling next week. Dave
Lenat will likely be doing the taxanomic ID.
I will prepare an addendum to the restoration plan for EBX to distribute.

Daniel:
Thank you for the information on the proposed monitoring activities.
Several items. I want to make sure that your pre-construction sampling is being done before any site
disturbance activities are done. I assume you meant to say prior to beginning restoration activities,
rather than prior to completing them.
Your sampling window of January -March is OK; however we would prefer that you try as much as
possible to keep the sampling within the same month or so each time. It is possible to introduce some
seasonal variability in samples collected from mid-January, and then a subsequent sample in
mid-March.
Macrobenthos samples must be sent to a laboratory certified to do macroinvertebrate identifications through
the DWQ Lab Certification program administered by the Environmental Services Section (15A NCAC 2H
.1100). The list of certified labs can be reviewed at the following link:

Please give me a call if you have any questions regarding this project.

Floogie Benthic Macroinvertebrate Monitoring Plan
Per DWQ 401/Wetlands Unit guidance EBX will perform benthic macroinvertebrate monitoring on
the Floogie Restoration Site. Pre-construction monitoring will be performed prior to the completion of
restoration activities in February 2008. Following restoration, Year 1 monitoring will be conducted in
January-March 2009. Additional monitoring will be conducted in January-March of 2011 (Year 3) and
2013 (Year 5).
Sampling will take place at two sites along the restoration reach and one site upstream.. of the project
area on Flat Swamp Creek. Restoration Site 1 will be near the downstream end of Reach 4 (between
STA 101+00 and 102+00). Restoration Site 2 will be near the southern terminus of Reach 2 (between
STA 36+00 and 37+00). In addition to the restoration sites, one sample will be taken upstream of the
project area on Flat Swamp Creek. The Qual 4 sampling method outlined in Standard .Operating
Procedures for Benthic Macroinvertebrates (NCDWQ 2006) will be utilized at all sampling locations.
Qua14 is an abbreviated standard qualitative sampling method used for smaller streams with less than
3 mil drainage area. The sampling method requires one kick net, one sweep, one leaf pack, and one
visual sample. All macroinvertebrates collected will be separated from sediments and detritus and
stored in a vial with 70 percent ethanol solution.
A North Carolina Division of Water Quality stream habitat evaluation form will be completed at each
sample reach during each sampling event. This form requires requires that 100 meters of stream be
evaluated. At each sampling site, habitat will be evaluated approximately 50 meters upstream and 50
meters downstream of where macroinvertebrates are collected.
All macroinvertebrates collected will be identified to the lowest taxonomic level by a qualified aquatic
ecologist. Findings and conclusions will be reported in the subsequent Floogie annual monitoring
report and submitted to all appropriate agencies. Year 5 benthic macroinvertebrate data will be
provided as a supplement following the Year 5 report submittal.
