Southdock Dredging Request

The NCDOT Ferry Division is requesting authorization to perform maintenance dredging at the Southdock Ferry
Terminal. This dredging project will be completed by the Marine Maintenance crew with the pipeline dredge that is
currently in use. We anticipate starting this project as soon as the Hatteras Inlet project is complete, an estimated start
time would be in the early part of January 2016. The proposed area that is being dredged has been dredged many times
before under our current permit but has recently built back up to a point that is causing trouble for the ferries coming in
and out of the terminal. The sand caught here creates a very shallow and long point that extends into the deeper water
channel. The dredging project will remove approximately 1,500 cubic yards of material, which will be placed into the
Southdock Spoil Site, and will allow for easier and safer passage to and from the ferry terminal. Dredging operations will
be kept 10' off of the bulkhead. Attached is a survey map that outlines that area that we are to dredge.
