Shortly after midnight on August 2, a process drain became partially obstructed by two plastic shackles, resulting in untreated process water being released through a manhole located on the exterior of the plant. The process water flowed down portions of paved and unpaved parking areas and into a stormwater inlet. That inlet conveys stormwater to a receiving pit(BMP)with a 2,200-gal capacity and equipped with a pump with pumping capacity of 75- gal/min. Material from this pit is pumped to the offal pit lift station and transferred to Tyson's on-site wastewater treatment plant(WWTP) prior to discharge to the City of Monroe POTW (the wastewater permit issued to Tyson from the City allows for incidental flows into the pit as well as the first 60-minutes of a rain event to be pumped to and treated by Tyson's on-site WWTP). It is estimated that the release lasted approx. 15 minutes, with an estimated 5,500- gal of process water leaving the manhole. A portion of the released material (assumed 25-30%)was entrained/absorbed in the gravel parking lot, with the remainder entering the storm inlet and receiving pit. A majority of the material entering the stormwater pit was pumped to the offal room and WWTP, as designed; however, it is estimated that 450- 500-gal was discharged from the outfall and to an unnamed tributary on an adjacent property. The material was contained within a small portion of the unnamed tributary, with no material reaching state waters. A vacuum truck was on-site by 6:30 am,August 2 and recovered approx. 500-550 gal of process water and ponded stormwater(the ponded stormwater was recovered out of an abundance of caution). Absorbent pads turned out to be ineffective, so few were used. The weight of the pads was<10 Ibs, about a gallon. Attached photos show: 1) the untreated process water within a confined portion of the unnamed tributary, 2)two totes containing recovered process water and ponded storm water, 3) picture of the impacted area following product recovery,4) clean-up efforts. 1) 2 yVA - . 406 - . \ - . - IP • Jf a ! - _ k 4rL,* . . - . . , 1' `' 1`` 1II i 07 y _ - & tQk - « \ w Al d- . . . .. , r : OF . m low. a. \ . t yyr .wra 5ti 45 ; ; . y•. Doug Baxter,Sr.Area Environmental RegionEast FoodsTyson TysoF vds13264 Mountain Road, Allen, . •. :•4 • doug.baxter@tyson.com This email and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended solely for the use of the addressee.
