Snider Water Quality Regional Operations Sections Winston-Salem Regional Office NCDEQ Mr. Snider, Russell W. Barr, I II, Alderman Calvin Green, Alderman Crystal C. Miller, Alderman John K. Reeves, Alderman Stephen Shoemaker, Alderman We had problems with the aerators on the oxidation ditch for a week or so before this event. The bearings were becoming worn and causing the couplings to tear. We had scheduled to have a company lift them out to replace the bearings, however they had not shown up yet. The couplings tore at some point the day before sampling, after the operator checked the plant that morning. We had two other aerators, but due to the hot weather, I believe they couldn't provide enough oxygen. We were able to replace the couplings the next morning and have since gotten the bearings replaced. BOD samples were back to below limit the rest of the month. We have also gotten approval to replace the aerators with a better designed aerator that should provide better service.
