Spill/Bypass Reporting Form (August 2014)
On Thursday morning about 1:30am the Henderson
wastewater plant lost power. Our emergency
generator then turned on but our B side switch gear
did not transfer power, which caused the generator
to not run. The operator on duty called the on -call
mechanic person. The maintenance supervisor also
came inn. He arrived and tried to troubleshoot the
problem. At about 2am we call Gregory Poole to try
an assistant on the problem. He arrived at around
2:30am. He found that a breaker had tripped in
another area in the generator room. At this point the
generator was put on in manual and Emergency
power was restored around 3:20am. We calculated
that the plant spilled from 1:30 AM to 3:20 AM. We
calculated this by taking our two large pump stations
and taking the number of gallons they pump per
minute and times that by the amount of time we had
no power at the plant and that's how we came up
with the 374,000 gallons of spill. We believe utility
power was restored around 6:30 AM that is when we
transferred back regular utility power. Gregory Poole
returned to the plant to try an figure out why this
happen. He found that the UPS on B side may have
been the reason for the problem. This cause B side
not to hold power until the Generator came on. The
radiator for the generator is run off 6 side. This
caused the Generator to have a over temp and shut
down. To correct this, we have replaced both UPSs
on both switch gears. We have also tested the
generator by cutting off utility power. Everything
switched over correctly. We will continue to run our
generator monthly to ensure this doesn't happen
again.
