Most of the houses are 40 plus years old, and now that they have been sitting empty it would cost a fortune to get them back to a standard needed to care for livestock. It could be torn down and rebuilt, but this unit was my fathers and uncle's life work. My father passed away last October, and my uncle is over 80 years old. It is on family land that we would not want to sell. So with all that said, we have no intentions of putting hogs back on this farm. The closure of the lagoons cost a lot of money, and everytime we have checked the Director of Edgecombe County soil conservation office tells us they have no money and it would cost a lot to close. We don't have the money to close the lagoon. With that said my uncle does maintain the lagoon, and has no intentions of abandoning the lagoon, as this is a farm that he is passionate about. He literally grew up on this farm with his childhood home on that site. At this point the Lagoons have not required pumping in quite a while, as the evaporation and the rainfall have offset one another. If it does need pumping the nitrogen level has falling down dramatically and that farm has 125 acres of clear land if he needs to pump. If money was available to close the lagoon, we have no problem closing it and would like it closed. But, with the contract cut short by NG Purvis, that money would have allowed us to have the dollars with cost sharing, to close it. If there were any grants available or that comes available we would appreciate you reaching out to us. Sincerely, John Bunting For Douglas Bun ng
