OAR ISLAND BOATING ACCESS AREA #890108
This project utilizes best management practices for
stormwater management. The site is approximately 2 .96 acres with
the entire site as a gravel parking lot. Runoff is diverted away
from the water by the use of a water side berm and a swale (see
map) . The runoff is diverted into a shallow course sandy basin
at the end of the berm and swale. Runoff will be detained in
this basin by the use of a check dam. This should allow for some
infiltration.

Oak Island Boating
Access Area
Brunswick County
Dear Mr. Phillips:
The Wilmington Regional Office received the site map for Oak Island
Boating Access Area on January 17, 1989 . As discussed on site with
you and Dan Taboben on January 11, 1989, this site will use Best
Management Practices to comply with the Stormwater regulations.
The following information is needed to assure compliance with these
regulations:
1) The area of the existing parking lot and the area of the
proposed parking lot.
2) A check dam should be placed at the end of the swale and
at the end of the small sand infiltration basin.
If you have any questions concerning this matter please call me at
( 919) 256-4161.
Sincerely,

Attention: Mr. Mark E. Hawes
Environmental Engineer I
Dear Mr. Hawes:
This is in reference to our on-site meeting at our Oak
Island Boating Access Area located in Brunswick County on
January 11, 1989.
The purpose of this meeting was to discuss best
management practice for stormwater runoff for our proposed
parking lot expansion.
As you saw, there is an existing buffer zone and sand
berm between the parking lot and the approximate high water
line. Also, there is an existing swale where stormwater
runoff from the parking lot collects and dissipates.
Stormwater runoff from the parking lot expansion will
be diverted to the existing swale by constructing an
additional swale along the South side of the existing
parking lot. If necessary a check dam will be installed in
the new swale to help control erosion.
Mr. Mark E. Hawes Page 2 January 13, 1989
I have roughly sketched on the site plan the location
of the new swale and the path of the stormwater runoff.
If you have questions or need additional information
please let me know.
Sincerely,
W. E. Phillips
