Test Pit Photographic Logs Summary of Test Pit Observations SUMMIT Project No.8333.G0004 Heritage at Marvin Test Pits October 25, 2023 SITE AND PROJECT DESCRIPTION The subject site is located off New Town Road in Marvin, North Carolina. A vicinity map showing the project's general location is provided as Figure 1. The subject property is approximately 46.5 acres and is comprised of Union County Tax Parcel ID Numbers 06240005 and 06225022. At the time of our field exploration the subject site was undeveloped woodlands. The test pit locations were selected by the Client. The test pit excavator and operator were provided by the Client. Access to the testing locatios required clearing of trees and was performed by the excavator/operator in conjunction with the test pit excavation. The SUMMIT field professional assisted with the layout of the test pits and clearing trails. PURPOSE OF STUDY The purpose of this test pit exploration was to obtain geotechnical information regarding the subsurface conditions. This report contains the following items: • General subsurface conditions observed at each test pit location, • Test Pit log(s) and approximate Test Pit Location Plans. 1 Summary of Test Pit Observations SUMMIT Project No.8333.G0004 Heritage at Marvin Test Pits October 25, 2023 EXPLORATION PROCEDURES On October 16th through October 18th of 2023, SUMMIT visited the site to observe the excavation of ten (10) test pits (identified as TP-1 to TP-10), and two (2) off-set test pits (identified as TP-1A and TP-2A) due to the shallow rock refusal encountered at those two borings. The testing locations were performed at the approximate areas shown on Figure 2—"Test Pit Location Plan" provided in Appendix 1. The testing areas were located by professionals from our office the site plan provided by the Client, site observations, hand-held GPS, and aerial maps as reference. The testing locations were not surveyed by SUMMIT and should be considered approximate. The test pits were excavated using a CAT 315L tracthoe. The test pits were excavated to approximate depths ranging from 3 to 20 feet below the existing ground surface. The test pits were backfilled with the excavated materials. The soils encountered from the test pits were collected and bagged and returned to our laboratory for examination and classification by a qualified geotechnical professional. SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS Generalized Subsurface Stratigraphy General subsurface conditions encountered during our test pit exploration are described herein. For more detailed soil descriptions and stratifications at a particular test pit location, the respective "Summary of Test Pit Observation Sheet" provided in Appendices 2 should be reviewed. Transitions between different strata in the field may be gradual in both the horizontal and vertical directions. Test Pit Observations Surface Materials/Topsoil Surface material (topsoil soils) was encountered at the existing ground surface of each of the testing locations for the exploration. The surface material thicknesses ranged from approximately 6 to 8 inches. The thickness of surface materials at the site should be expected to 2 Summary of Test Pit Observations SUMMIT Project No.8333.G0004 Heritage at Marvin Test Pits October 25, 2023 vary, and measurements necessary for detailed quantity estimation were not performed for this report. Residual Soils Residual (undisturbed) soils were encountered below the surface material in all of the testing locations. The residual soils generally consisted of sandy silts (ML), silty sands (SM), and poorly graded sands (SP). Water Level Measurements Groundwater was NOT bserved within any of the test pits for this exploration. Even though groundwater was NOT observed at the time of excavation, the soils observed in some of the test pits appeared to have moist soil conditions. Soil moisture conditions may indicate the presence of groundwater. The moisture conditions encountered are noted in the test pit logs. It should also be noted that groundwater levels tend to fluctuate with seasonal and climatic variations, as well as with some types of construction operations. Therefore, water may be encountered during construction at depths not indicated in the test pits performed for this exploration. Difficult Excavation and/or Track Hoe Refusal Difficult Excavation was encountered in five (5) of the test pits performed for this exploration. Difficult excavation is defined as soil-like material exhibiting difficult excavation for the track hoe used. The difficult excavation depths ranged from 2 to 7 feet bgs. Track hoe refusal conditions were encountered in four (4) of the test pits performed for this exploration with. Track hoe refusal is defined as material that could not be penetrated by the trackhoe equipment used during our field exploration. Materials that might result in refusal include partially weathered rock, large boulders, rock ledges, lenses, seams or the top of parent bedrock. Track hoe refusal depths ranged from 3 to 15 feet bgs. 3 Summary of Test Pit Observations SUMMIT Project No.8333.G0004 Heritage at Marvin Test Pits October 25, 2023 Summary Table of Difficult Excavation and Excavator Refusal Track Hoe/Hand Total Excavation Difficult Excavation Auger Refusal Depth (feet)' Test Pit No. Approx. We anticipate that the residual soils can be excavated using pans, scrapers, backhoes, and front end loaders. Depending on the location, excavations deeper than approximately 3 to 14.3 in the general area of test pits TP1 through TP-4 feet may require specialized equipment and procedures. The actual rippability of these in-place materials is however, dependent on many factors such as 4 Summary of Test Pit Observations SUMMIT Project No.8333.G0004 Heritage at Marvin Test Pits October 25, 2023 the operator's skill level, equipment, and the techniques used during excavation, degree of weathering within the formation, rock hardness, rock structure (i.e., foliations or bedding), jointing and fracture spacing and necessary size or width of excavation. Rippability of weathered rock is typically more difficult in confined excavations. The table below may be used as a quick reference for rippability of in-place materials. Summary of Rippability Based on SPT N-Values N-Values as Shown Description of N-Values Anticipated Rippability on Boring Logs These materials may generally be excavated 60>N-Value N-values less than 60 bpf with heavy-duty equipment such as a Caterpillar D-8 with a single-shank ripper N-values more than 60 bpf, These materials are considered marginally 60<N-Value<50/3" but less than 50 blows per 3 excavatable, even with heavy-duty inches of penetration equipment. N-values more than 50 blows Blasting and/or removal with impact 50/3„< N-Value per 3 inches of penetration hammers is typically required to excavate these materials. *This table is for general information only.Actual rippability is dependent upon many other factors as stated a bove. Care should be exercised during excavations for footings on rock to reduce disturbance to the foundation elevation. The bottom of each footing should be approximately level. When blasting is utilized for foundation excavation in rock, charges should be held above design grades. Actual grades for setting charges should be selected by the contractor and he should be responsible for any damage caused by the blasting. All loose rock should be carefully cleaned from the bottom of the excavation prior to pouring concrete. Footing excavations in which the rock subgrade has been loosened due to blasting should be deepened to an acceptable bearing elevation. In our professional opinion, a clear and appropriate definition of rock should be included in the project specifications to reduce the potential for misunderstandings. A sample definition of rock for excavation specifications is provided below: Rock is defined as any material that cannot be dislodged during mass grading by a Caterpillar D-8 tractor, or equivalent, equipped with a hydraulically operated power ripper without the use of drilling and blasting. For rock removal in confined excavations (e.g., utility excavations) marginally excavatable materials (softer PWR 50/3"-50/6") may be accomplished using a 5 Summary of Test Pit Observations SUMMIT Project No.8333.G0004 Heritage at Marvin Test Pits October 25, 2023 large trackhoe Caterpillar 325, or equivalent with rock teeth without the use of drilling and blasting. However harder materials (PWR 50/0"-50/3")in confined excavations will not likely be possible with conventional equipment and typically requires blasting. Boulders or masses of rock exceeding % cubic yard in volume shall also be considered rock excavation. This classification does not include materials such as loose rock, concrete, or other materials that can be removed by means other than drilling and blasting, but which for any reason, such as economic reasons, the Contractor chooses to remove by drilling and blasting. CONCLUSION Based on our findings and previous experience, we anticipate that the residual soils encountered in the majority of the test pits can be generally excavated using pans, scrapers, bulldozers, and/or track hoes. Additionally, we anticipate that the general excavation for footings and utilities will be generally possible with conventional excavating techniques. The residual soils encountered in the test pits performed in this exploration, in our opinion, are suitable for use as structural fill for typical residential construction. The soils to be used as structural fill, placed within structural areas, should be free of organics, roots or other deleterious materials. After stripping and rough excavation grading, we recommend that areas to provide support for foundations, slabs, pavements or structural fill be carefully inspected for soft surficial soils and proofrolled with loaded dump truck or similar pneumatic tired vehicle (minimum loaded weight of 20 tons). Any areas which pump, rut or deflect excessively should be undercut to firmer soils prior to fill placement. We anticipate that some undercutting of the near-surface soils may be required along the low-lying drainage features during site development. The extent of the undercut required will likely be dependent on the time of year and type of construction operation. The use of bridge lifts or geotextiles through the direction of a geotechnical engineer can be utilized in some situations to minimize undercutting. 6 Summary of Test Pit Observations SUMMIT Project No.8333.G0004 Heritage at Marvin Test Pits October 25, 2023 QUALIFICATIONS OF REPORT This test pit exploration has been provided for the sole use of JCP OP, LLC.
