Subject: NPDES Certificate of Coverage NCG550181
Treatment system capacity
Rockingham County
Dear Mr. Tillotson:
This letter is to document the telephone conversation we had regarding the capacity of your home's
wastewater treatment system. The Division calculates potential wastewater discharge from a system like
yours based on the number of bedrooms in the home. For each bedroom, the Division calculates a potential
wastewater discharge of up to 120 gallons per day.
When the Division originally issued this Certificate of Coverage (CoC), the residence had three bedrooms.
This yields in a potential wastewater flow of up to 360 gallons/day. You're now proposing to add an
additional bedroom to the home, which would increase the potential discharge to ca.480 gallons/day.
The Division does not object to your proposal. NPDES General Permit NCG550000 allows for discharges of
up to 1000 gallons of treated wastewater per day. The addition of an another bedroom does not violate the
existing CoC, or the General Permit.
PLEASE NOTE:Based on the available records, the wastewater system you operate was installed in the
early 1980s. Proper maintenance of the system is critical to keep it in compliance with NCG550000, and to
prevent violation of water quality standards.
If you have any questions concerning this matter, please contact Joe Corporon of the NPDES program at
(919) 707-3617 or via e-mail[joe.corporon@ncdenr.gov].
Sincerely,
Charles H.Weaver,Jr.
