Dear Mr. Smith:
On January 19, 2011, Mike Thomas of this office performed a Compliance Evaluation Inspection
on the wastewater treatment system serving your residence. Observations indicated that the subsurface
sandfilter system was operating properly. Chlorine tablets were found present in the tablet chlorinator.
Additionally, no discharge was being produced at the pipe outlet located adjacent to the Unnamed
Tributary to Wolf Island Creek, classified as "C" in the Roanoke River Basin.
Please note that should the system discharge, then annual effluent samples would be required to be
collected from the pipe outlet for BOD, TSS and fecal coliform per Part I.(A) of the permit. A NC
certified laboratory must perform this wastewater analysis and all records must be retained on site for a
period of three years from the sample date and shall be made available to the state upon request.
As you are aware, the General Permit requires that the septic tank contents be pumped out every
three to five years as preventative maintenance. This pumping is necessary to prevent solids from
clogging the sandfilter. The permit expires next on July 31, 2012. At renewal, the application will
require you to provide a copy of an invoice showing that the septic tank has been pumped per this permit
requirement.
Should you have any questions, please contact Mike Thomas or me at (336) 771-5000.
Sincerely,
W. Corey Basinger
