Subject: Variance Modification
Separation Distance from Wells
Small Diameter Pressure Lines
Dear Mr. Shearin:
The Non -Discharge Permitting Unit has completed a review of the subject variance issued
April 13, 2000. Following this review and discussions with engineers involved in projects in
Mecklenburg County, a modification to the original variance is being approved,
A variance is granted for the use of SDR 13.5 PVC pipe in lieu of Ductile Iron Pipe within the
25-ft to 100 ft. radius of private wells for pipe sizes where ferrous pipe is not available regardless of
whether one or more wells are involved. Note that the previous variance approval was for where
multiple well radii overlap. The line within the well radius must be tested to water main standards
with zero leakage and a detector tape shall be placed over the pipe. Service lines should be routed as
far as practicable from the well(s). These conditions must be included as notes on the plans each place
that this variance is exercised.
Approval of this variance is granted only for situations where there is no other feasible location
for the sewer line.
