Good afternoon Michael,
Last week we completed the seal repair for well #2 and disinfected all three wells. We are prepared to collect the
coliform samples, however, one of the pump systems has stopped working and needs repair. We are in the
process of coordinating with contractors to get the system back up and running. Unfortunately, this will delay our
sampling since we are unable to collect samples while the system is not running.
We appreciate your patience and will update you when we have collected the samples.

Good afternoon. I am sorry this has taken so long, but I was hoping for some feedback from others regarding
which analyses are appropriate. This has not been forthcoming, so I will make a judgement call.
The coliform samples are intended to assess whether or not the well has been contaminated by bacteria from
surface water infiltration, an improper seal, or improper disinfection following service of the well. This being the
case, I think there are several ways that you can proceed.
1. I assume you contacted the County Department of Health, but if not, you may wish to do this as well. They
may be able to analyze the sample, or recommend someone that can.
2. You could setup the sampling equipment, and draw a sample with one of our personnel present to collect
the actual sample, which could then be analyzed for total and fecal coliform at our laboratory.
3. You could collect the sample independently, and have it analyzed at a local laboratory for E. Coli following
the analytical method you provided previously.
4. You could disinfect the well and heat exchanger system, and then verify that it is sealed.

I have been in contact with Poole Well who directed us to the labs previously mentioned (Eurofins and Waypoint) that
were either not local or do not run it by the same methods previously used, which are SM999D for fecal coliform and
9222B for total coliform.
Is it possible for us to collect the samples and drop them off at your lab for analysis? Or, have DEQ re -sample the wells
following the methods they used the first time?
I apologize for the run-around, but it seems we have come full circle on our options in terms of finding the appropriate
lab methods.

I asked a colleague if she had any ideas for coliform testing near Durham and while she didn't know of any labs she
suggested contacting a well inspection/well company in the area. I've listed a couple of examples below that advertise

I'm working with the property manager at a site in Durham to re -sample their geothermal wells for fecal and total
coliform per DEQ. We are trying to find a local lab that uses the same methods from the first sampling. To my
understanding, these are SM999D for fecal coliform and 9222B for total coliform. We have tried Waypoint (not local),
Pace (not local), Eurofins (uses different methods), and Wake County (uses different methods). Do you have any
suggestions for how/where to get this sampling done?

Good afternoon. I checked with our laboratory, and we typically use SM999D for fecal coliform, and 9222B for total
coliform. According to our lab, the methods you identified are only approved for E Coli in ambient water, and not for
coliform.
Hopefully this helps. I f you need more information, I can put you in touch with our laboratory.

We're workingwith NP Loden Durham, LLC to fixthe geothermal well issues mentioned in the attached report
dated January 16, 2024. In regards to the coliform testing, would the following lab methods forfecal and total be
acceptable:

We are trying to find a lab that can run this locally.
